Liposuction – Lipoplasty

Do you have stubborn fat deposits that prevent you from seeing the toned, sculpted figure you want? Several common areas of fat storage can be resistant to diet and exercise, and often don’t go away without intervention. These areas are often on the outer thighs and hips in women and the waist and back in men, as well as the abdomen, back, buttocks, legs, and upper arms. If you are not obese and want to reduce and contour these areas, liposuction may be your answer.

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction removes fat from your body using suction. Your body stores fat nearly everywhere throughout your body, but some areas are known for their resistance to fat-burning exercise and diets. Excess fat deposits grow when individual fat cells grow larger. By physically removing fat cells from the body, you ensure that the area does not create new fat cells to replace the ones taken out during the plastic surgery procedure.

Using the latest techniques and treatment options, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. John Paul Tutela will target specific fat deposits and remove unwanted fat to restore your body to a more shapely contour.

THE LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE

A local anesthetic is used to numb the area of your body where your fat deposit is accessed. Next, a tumescent liposuction solution is injected into the treatment area, which includes lidocaine and adrenaline. Lidocaine is an anesthetic that makes the process more comfortable, and adrenaline is used to reduce inflammation and bleeding. Then the chosen liposuction procedure will be performed, whether traditional liposuction surgery or with novel liposuction devices.

Dr. Tutela will make a few tiny incisions throughout the treatment area through which a cannula, a dull, hollow tube, is inserted into the fat deposit, where it removes fat cells with gentle suction. Liposuction in the northern New Jersey area may not require general anesthesia (which makes you sleep through the procedure), meaning you may be able to drive yourself home if only local anesthetic is used.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR LIPOSUCTION IN THE NORTHERN NEW JERSEY AREA?

Good candidates for liposuction procedures are generally healthy people who are at or close to their ideal weight, are non-smokers, and have realistic expectations for the results of their treatment. The goal of liposuction is to subtly shape the fat pads throughout the body to create a personalized, natural-looking figure that emphasizes a person’s curves and underlying frame.

You may not be a good candidate if you have a BMI over 35, if there are other problems, such as separated abdominal muscles, that are better solved through cosmetic surgery, or if you have underlying health conditions that would make the procedure too risky. In these cases, Dr. Tutela can recommend other plastic surgery procedures, such as a tummy tuck, or non-invasive treatments to help you achieve the figure you want.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM LIPOSUCTION?

The main purpose of liposuction in NYC is to reshape one or more areas of your body, not as a weight loss solution. Liposuction is typically used on “problem” areas that have not responded well to diet and exercise.

Improvement in body contour is noticeable right after surgery. However, improvement continues for several weeks or even months as the swelling from the procedure goes away. The full effects of having liposuction in the Northern New Jersey Area may not be visible for several months.

HOW LONG IS RECOVERY FROM LIPOSUCTION?

Most people are able to get up and move around as soon as the treatment is finished and after the effects of the anesthesia and any sedation have worn off. Depending on the extent of your procedure you may be able to return to your normal activities as soon 1-2 weeks.

After the procedure, the body area treated is firmly wrapped to help reduce swelling, bruising, and pain. Elastic bandages and tape, support hose, a special girdle, or another type of firm-fitting garment may be used, depending on which part of the body was treated. You may have to wear the compression garment or wrap for 3 to 4 weeks to reduce swelling and help ensure the liposuction results are as natural as intended. Much of the bruising and swelling may be apparent for the first 7 to 10 days, after which most of it will dissipate and you’ll enjoy most of the final result.
