If you or your children have ears that protrude or are misshapen, surgery may be an option. Otoplasty (ear) surgery in the Northern New Jersey Area is most commonly done on children ages 4 to 14 years of age but adults undergo this surgery, too.
WHAT IS OTOPLASTY?
Otoplasty can correct ear conditions such as protruding ears, abnormally large ear lobes, lop ear (in which the tip folds down and bends forward), and shell ear (in which certain features of a normal ear are missing).
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR OTOPLASTY IN THE NORTHERN NEW JERSEY AREA?
Each patient’s circumstances requires an individual analysis by Dr. Tutela for reconstruction. Because there are many operations for the many different types of ear abnormalities, surgery can be relatively simple or more involved.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM OTOPLASTY IN THE NORTHERN NEW JERSEY AREA?
The surgery will last about one to three hours, depending on how complex the procedure for your case is.
If you are an adult, Dr. Tutela probably will use local anesthesia with a sedative. A child will likely receive general anesthesia (be put to sleep) to ensure that he or she doesn’t move their head during the operation.
HOW LONG IS RECOVERY FROM OTOPLASTY?
You should plan to stay home at least one week after the surgery. Children also should stay home from school for at least one week.
Your head will be bandaged before you are sent home. Most often it is worn for three days, and Dr. Tutela may provide you with a headband-type protective dressing, which you may have to wear for up to three weeks to promote proper healing.
