Tummy Tuck – Abdominoplasty

A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. But sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals. If you have an abdomen that protrudes, is loose, or saggy, a tummy tuck may be for you.

After weight loss or after pregnancy the body is damaged with abdominal musculature and fascia being stretched thin and unable to retain its shape and stability.  Regardless of diet and exercise the lax abdomen will not return to its flat tight position without surgery.  “It truly is a surgical problem.”  In addition to tightening the abdominal muscles, Dr. Tutela will trim away the excess skin that has stretched and lost its youthful recoil.  Many stretch marks are included in the skin that is trimmed away, greatly reducing the number of visible stretch marks and even in some cases getting rid of all of them.

WHAT IS A TUMMY TUCK?

Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.  The scars may be short (Mini-Abdominoplasty) or may extend along the lower abdomen hidden only by a bikini (full abdominoplasty).

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM A TUMMY TUCK IN THE NORTHERN NEW JERSEY AREA?

Your tummy tuck will result in a flatter, firmer abdominal contour that is more proportionate with your body type and weight.  The procedure itself lasts 2 to 4 hours and is usually performed using general anesthesia. Sometimes patients may also benefit from liposuction.

The final results of Tummy Tuck surgery in the Northern New Jersey Area may be initially obscured by swelling and your inability to stand fully upright until internal healing is complete. But within a week or two, you should be standing tall and confident in your new slimmer profile.

HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY FROM A TUMMY TUCK?

Once the tummy tuck is complete in NYC, a patient should expect temporary pain, swelling, and numbness in the area. Discomfort is well-controlled for most people with prescription pain medication.

Patients usually return to work in about 2 weeks, though strenuous activity will need to be limited for 4 to 6 weeks.  A compression garment is typically worn for 6 weeks after the operation. Fading and flattening of the scars takes 3 months to 2 years depending on a person’s skin type and the care they take during recovery.  Minor revisions also may be required.  The results of a tummy tuck are generally considered permanent.

Since recovery time depends on your individual procedure, Dr. Tutela will discuss your recovery time with you during your consultation.
